Proponents of multi-culturalism assume that assimilationist politics such as mine would create or assume a monolithic culture without difference. But this is far from the truth. It is not true, for example, that those who support some kind of democracy in the Middle East and support the current war against Islamism, believe that, for this to happen, the Arabs have to become "American."

Here's some proof. Finally, some fruit, and may it grow, has been borne of what Bush counseled as patience. A number of Sunni Arab tribes is getting fed up with the Islamist insurgents. The Sunnis are beginning to fight back, of their own accord, not against American fire power but with it.

This welcome development does not let Bush off the hook for what he's gotten wrong with the Iraq theater. It demonstrates what is possible for the Middle East. Imagine that, a fight for democracy passionately fought in the name of one's tribe. How ancient Greek, in its way! The Sunni Arabs will win the war the only way they can - as Sunni Arabs. Not American wannabes.
