45 more Black Africans have been killed by Arab, pro-government militias in the western Sudanese province of Darfur. This is the latest in a string of attacks by Arabs, backed by Sudan’s government, aimed at ethnically cleansing Darfur of Black Christians and indigenous believers. Anytime a Palestinian skins his/her knee, it is front-page news, but stories of the horrors in western Sudan remain few and far between. I saw a “special report” about Darfur on CNN last week. The reporter, Christine Amanpur, was careful never to mention anything about roots of the conflict. She just talked about the humanitarian crisis, and the harsh lives of people living in refugee camps. I guess CNN wanted to be careful not to hurt the feelings of Arabs responsible for driving these poor people into refugee camps. Think I’m speculating? The British newspaper The Telegraph reported on 4/18/2003, In an opinion piece for the New York Times last Friday, [chief news executive of CNN Eason] Jordan admitted that over the past 12 years CNN had buried a series of deeply damaging stories about the brutality of Saddam Hussein's regime. In early March, Sudanese Arabs killed 75 Black Africans, raped 100, and abducted 350. Later that same month, pro-Sudanese government militias rounded up and massacred 136 Black African men. One million people have fled western Sudan. According to the BBC, The Brussels-based International Crisis Group (ICG) has called for immediate action in the region - especially from the UN Security Council - to save hundreds of thousands of people they warn are facing attack, disease and starvation. … The UN's "inaction?" The United Nations Human Rights Commission “expressed solidarity” with the Sudan in April. That’s proactive support for a nation sponsoring rape, mass murder, and ethnic cleansing. Please awaken me from this Orwellian nightmare. |
